Here is another terrible admission from The Soulless Machine. I really like the new trend of dance movies. Two of my favorites are Stomp the Yard (2007) and Save the Last Dance (2001). If you want a good list of dance movies you can check out: Dance 1977 – Present.
Step Up is a fun and very light movie that people of all ages can enjoy. Just don’t go into the movie expecting a great plot or suburb character acting. The fun part about dance movies is not the acting, but the dancing.
I…don’t have much more to say about the movie. It was was it was, a classic dance movie. If you don’t know what themes are in a classic dance movie, they are: a rich kid who is trying to excel in dance meets a poor disenfranchised kid who uses dance as an expression sexual prowess; the classes meet and bust a move; something in their lives threatens this new class harmony; dance is a common denominator and will save us. Well, that is about it.
If you are new to dance movies, don’t start here. Step Up is the consumer version of a high grade addictive substance. Try starting with a classic like Dirty Dancing (1987) or if you can do with out the plot, So You Think You Can Dance:
Go Joshua!
