I did not have high hopes for X-Files: I Want to Believe. I went in with very low expectations that should have been easily meet. I guess that joke is on me. Not one of wishes for the movie was fulfilled.
I truly want to believe that I’m one of the many loyal X-Files fans left. Just look at the tattoo on my right forearm. However, this movie has made it even harder to be a fan.
The movie was a two hour non-mythology episode. I don’t need all my X-Files to revolve around the mythology that the show built up. I liked many of the creature features of the week that made the show the best horror drama on television. So, I guess that a chop-shop modern day Frankenstein is okay, but it is just okay; not a good reason to resurrect Agent Fox Mulder and Dana Scully from private citizen obscurity.
I think that some of details really ran this movie into the ground. At this point, after Scully has seen so much, after she had become Spooky Mulder in late season eight and even more so in nine, conversations around “could this be happening” are dull at best and truly unbelievable. I also did not care for the on and off lover long-term relationship. Either Scully would have come to terms with Mulder’s obsession with his sister or she would have left him high and dry long ago.
Even with all that going wrong, the biggest disappointment was in the first 15 minutes. I guess that the movie had to explain why Mulder was back in action, but the way it was done left me cold. I would think that the writers could have come up with a better reason than a need to work with a psychic in order to find a missing agent.
At this point I feel really bad. I don’t like to say bad things. I would prefer to say nothing at all. I know that I said that I went in with low expectations for the movie, but I really want the movie to be good.
The truth is out There; just not in this movie.
See this one at your own risk.
