The Last Hit Man (2008)

Harry Tremayne has a reputation of never missing. He is the best. Yet, today when he is positioned on a roof top and he has his target in the cross hairs, he misses for the first time. From here the plot unfolds as he comes to terms with this age and cancer.

The Last Hit Man is probably the best low-budget film that I’ve seen this year. I say low-budget because it didn’t really have any big special effects or A-list actors. However, don’t let that stop you from seeing this gem.

The acting was good. The movie is about aging Hit Man (played by Joe Mantegna) who finds out that he has a terminal brain cancer, and his daughter (played by Elizabeth Whitmere). This father daughter duo is legend in the business. They are the best. When you want someone killed, you hire the Tremayne family to get the job done.

There are no showy gun battles in this movie; I would even go so far as to say that this is not an action/adventure but a drama. As the plot unfolds it is clear that the The Last Hit Man is more about a father daughter relationship than about assassin work. I think that if you watch this one that you will agree that the interactions between father and daughter as they reconcile are some of the best.

You won’t want to miss this one.

  1. This was, without a doubt, one of the most boring films of the year.

A film about a hitman dying and all there is is talk, talk and more talk. No stakes. No desperation. Plodding pace with one excellent shot: at the beginning when the young daughter waits in the car, Joe goes in that building to knock off a coupla guys. The camera swoops up in one shot and catches everything outside the window. Sweet.

After that- pretty much down hill. It’s like the filmmakers blew their load on that one shot and after that were creatively bankrupt.

  2. The most boring hitman film ever commited to screen.

  3. Okay, I’ll admit that the film was slow and had a lot of talk and very little action, but that is what I liked about it. It was diffrent. Could it have been better, Yes.
