Pitch Black (2000)

Richard B. Riddick (played by Vin Diesel) is my all time favorite antihero. He is an unapologetic badass that is in it to win (or at least find peace and be left alone). He is a monster, a killer, a heartless and cruel character of the night that has been gifted (or cursed) with the ability to see in low or no light, the athleticism of a heavy weight boxer, and the dexterity of an Olympic gymnast.

Riddick makes his debut in this campy medium budget movie about a transport ship that crash lands on a plant that plunges into complete darkness. The planet is inhabited by nocturnal flying shark-like creatures that are allergic to sunlight. Riddick is why this movie is worth watching and re-watching, over and over again.

Riddick is on this transport because he has been tracked down and captured by William J. Johns (played by Cole Hauser). I’ve always wandered how Johns was able to corner and bag Riddick. Not even the special features can convince me that Johns was good enough to get the upper leg. However, I can’t for the life of me decide why Riddick would have let himself be caught.

Riddick is the ultimate opportunist. The band of crash survivors find themselves in a bind that only Riddick can get them out of successfully. Still, Riddick is no hero. When he sees that not everyone will make it, he does not shed tears for think twice about leaving that person behind to die. To Riddick that is life, either you are strong enough to survive or you are not.

Pitch Black is a good movie. However, The Chronicles of Riddick mythology will out last Pick Black (in time line order):

Escape from Butcher Bay (2004) video game
Assault on Dark Athena (in production) video game
Slam City download
Into Pitch Black (2000) television
Pitch Black (2000)
Dark Fury (2004)

My favorite quote from Pitch Black:
Riddick: And then you get sent to a slam where they tell you you’ll never see daylight again. So you dig up a doctor, pay him twenty menthol Kools to do a surgical shine job on your eyes…
