Stargate (1994)

I start this review with a confession. I am a Stargate the T.V. series fan. So this review is a little bias. The movie was written by Dean Devlin….who by the way also produced/written giant piles of crap like Independence Day and Godzilla. However, despite that Stargate is actually a good science fiction movie.
The premise is that in 1928 a dig in Egypt uncovered a alien artifact. This artifact can open a door between it and another gate anywhere in the universe as long as you know the address. A professor named Daniel Jackson is recruited to help in the translation of the stone that covered the gate. He is the one that realizes how the gate works and tricks his way on to the team that will go through the gate. The leader of the team is Colonel Jack O’Neil. The team goes to a planet that has human life on it. The team discover that the alien that built the Stargate has been enslaving humans to mine the minerals that it needs to sustain its life.

James Spader plays Daniel Jackson and does a fine job. He makes nerdy Daniel Jackson a believable character. Oddly enough the actor in the T.V. series (Michael Shanks) has been using James Spader’s performance as his guild for the role. However, Kurt Russell’s portrayal of Colonel O’Neil is brilliant. Kurt Russell is a awesome actor. I find that I like almost anything he is in and he has the ability to make bad movies good.

The movie is fun and has some great action sequences. Also the T.V. series is a blast. I would highly recomend checking them both out.
