The Mist (2007)

Stephen King and Frank Darabont bring us into a world not that far removed from our own with The Mist.  A major (possible tornado level) storm hit a small town forcing Dave Drayton (Thomas Jane), Brent Norton (Andre Braugher), and Dave’s son Billy (Nathan Gamble) to go into town for supplies.

Dave notices a mist rolling in down from the mountains, but thinks little of it…

The Mist is a definate thriller for anyone who’s ever looked into a dark room and really wondered what’s in there that we cannot see. The mist serves the same purpose, it’s the unknown. Our fears are realized as soon as Dave notices something attempting to force the shipping door from the outside. Things become worse when several locals decide that they need to clear the vent from the outside. Things become even worse still when a woman (believably played by Marcia Gay Harden) starts quoting from the bible and quickly drives herself insane when her predictions come true to an extent. Perhaps moreso than the creatures in the mist, this character scared me.

The favorite character quickly becomes a bag boy in his 40’s named Ollie Weeks (Toby Jones) who shows signs of brillance in a Supermarket full of people who in some cases are too afraid to act or worse, act out of stupidity.

This movie is a thrill-ride. A friend mentioned he had read that Stephen King himself was pleasently surprised with the new ending written for the movie. I highly recommend this movie even if you don’t want a reminder of how easily things can get out of control or how easily a group of nice towns people can end up at eachother’s throats when the going gets rough.

I just finished watching it this afternoon while balancing the checkbook. It was very good. I had thought that movie was just a remake of “Fog” and was not all that interested in the movie. Well, that was until a tentacle reaches of the Mist to claim a clerk for lunch – That was great!

The movie has great monsters and the acting is good. The best part of the movie is the unexpected ending. I love it.

I had read the novella on which this movie was based and I have to say I loved what they did with it. The acting was really good, better than most of the movies based off S. King’s writings. I have to say that out of the three movies I rented the other night (The Mist, AVP:R, and P2), it was definitely the best. Of course, that’s pretty much a no brainer.
